Worry Warrior

The Worry Warrior tool has been designed for children who suffer from anxiety disorders or who is prone to get anxious and worry about things happening in their lives.  It can be used as an informal evaluation tool or as a therapeutic tool to engage children in an interactive, fun way in the process of understanding what happens when you worry too much and how to change these thoughts into a constructive, realistic and even positive thought process.   This tool has been designed to present lively, animated, colourful graphics to help children remember the effect and process of changing thoughts much better than a mere discussion or paper activities will achieve.  When this tool has been implemented enough, together with other media, a child should be more aware of the whole process of cognitive restructuring that needs to take place when he/she becomes anxious or starts worrying about situations or incidents in his/her life.

The main objective:

The main objective of this instrument is to teach children the effect of worrying too much and how to put worrisome thoughts under control by making use of a Venus flytrap metaphor.  The principle of worrisome thoughts making the problem bigger than it may be is illustrated by means of a colourful, animated, interactive process in which each worrisome thought causes the Venus flytrap to grow bigger.  On the other side it also presents an option of minimizing the Venus flytrap by “spraying” it with a pesticide of changed, more realistic and even positive thoughts.  In the process of coming up with worrisome thoughts and then changing it to more realistic positive thoughts the child learns how to think about problems or worrisome situations in his/her life. In conjunction with other tools it can serve as a very powerful medium to help children with the cognitive restructuring process when anxiety strikes or when the child is continually faced with worrisome thoughts that causes anxiety.
