The Island Expression Medium

This is an expression medium used by professionals in their assessment of the testee’s (child/client) perception of the level of attachment that he/she experiences and the level of support that he/she receives from significant other people in his/her life.  Different scenarios are used in which the child can choose whom he/she would like to place in that position, for example on an island with the child, on the main land away from the child, on a boat visiting or near the shark who must chase that person away, bite him/her or even kill that person.  The specific placement of significant people in the child’s life in these various scenarios gives an indication of the attachment and support levels the child experiences in his/her life pertaining to these people.

Intended target group:

This medium is intended for children and adolescents who can communicate in a meaningful way when basic questions are asked.  Depending on the child’s intellectual level it can be used with children as young as 3 years of age.  This medium is very basic, so after testing it on preadolescents the facilitator can decide if it will be suitable to use with specific individual adolescents.

This medium is intended for use in individual assessments only.

The manual and instructions incorporated in the software were written in English, although the product can be used just as effectively in any other language due to the fact that it depends on the language used in communication between the professional and the child, as well as visual images which are language independent.

This medium is intended for use by a professional functioning within an assessment, counseling or therapeutic setting only.  It has not been designed for facilitators who haven’t been professionally trained with regard to the interpretation of children’s expressions within a professional evaluation, or for lay people as such.
